Create-your-own doughnuts in Highland Park
We’ve survived a recent cakeballs kick and even the chichi crème caramel invasion without blowing our balanced diet. But now our resolve is weakening due to Donut Friend, a just-opened spot where you custom-create your own holey delight.
First you choose your doughnut type (traditional, vanilla or chocolate cake, baked, gluten-free), then decide on a filling (there are scores, from apple jam to whipped cream). Next you get glazed--that’s vanilla bean, chocolate, maple, lemon or strawberry. Finally, you opt for add-ons (powdered sugar, fresh fruit...bacon).
Head spinning from the pressure? Just scan the wall menu for one of the shop’s recipes, each named after a rock band in a nod to owner Mark Trombino’s record-producer background. We recommend Jets to Basil, a delightful interplay of sweet strawberry jam, tart goat cheese and fresh herbs.
Enjoy your treat along with ice cold milk at the long counter--you’ll be glad for the sparkling bathroom for your necessary postprandial hands-to-elbow scrubbing. Stop into Donut Friend stat, since we’re predicting near riots soon when Cronuts are added to the menu.
