Buko pandan and vanilla custards, upside-down ube pie and bread pudding are some of the treats at new Sherman Oaks bakery Crème Caramel.
Front-of-house manager Liz Beeson shows off her unicorn nail art alongside one of Crème Caramel's cleverest creations: "Unicorn Poop." (It's actually delicious meringue dusted with sprinkles.)
Bread pudding is made with a combination of challah and brioche breads and served heated, drizzled with salted caramel.
Besides fresh baked goods, Crème Caramel stocks a range of locally made, pre-packaged gift items such as Z Confections Rosemary Salted Caramel Corn.
A bakery wall is covered with patrons' colored renditions of the bakery mascot, an anthropomorphized custard who is happily crazed.
We?re usually pretty good about keeping drool off our computer, but as we?re typing right now, these keys are a sticky mess.
That?s because we can?t stop eating the light-looking--but flavor-packed--desserts from the new Crème Caramel bakery. And, like the diminutive shop itself, these tiny, single-serve treats pack a big wallop.
For those not about to enter a food coma, a history lesson: Crème caramel is the French custard flan made of egg, dairy and sugar. At the new shop dedicated to the smooth stuff, founder Kristine de la Cruz uses fresh farmers?-market fare including nougat-like Ube (a purple yam) and the super-light buko pandan (a young coconut), which recall flavor profiles from her Filipino-American childhood in L.A.
There are also crazypants delicious tins of challah and brioche bread pudding ($6) in variations like caramelized bacon and apple cobbler. (A takeaway tip: To enjoy at home, put custard in a 325-degree oven for 15 minutes, then drizzle with the salted caramel included.)
We?re calling ahead to order these for a big reveal at our next dinner party. But it?s going to be tough to get out of the two-table shop without eating them first.
