Masterful draping is an Obando trademark. The designer has a sixth sense for what women want, perhaps because his pre-fashion career was as a creative director for top advertising firms such as Young & Rubicam and Saatchi & Saatchi, with clients including BMW and Coca-Cola.
Who says evening wear has to mean a dress? Here, a flowing top and pants in electric red from the resort collection.
Obando’s branched out into well-priced accessories, improbably inspired by trips to the hardware store. His silver horsebit bracelet ($500) recalls the Hermès bit motif.
The fall event season is coming up--when you want a knock-’em-dead dress that inspires envy but doesn’t make you look like you’re trying too hard. For this special sartorial challenge, we’ve got Juan Carlos Obando on speed dial.
In a short time, the Los Angeles-based designer has wowed both coasts: He’s the toast of Hollywood (looking good, Freida Pinto), a new Vogue award nominee and his most recent collection quadrupled its Barneys sales from the previous year.
We tried on this slinky, silk bias-cut number ($2,995) in a surprisingly lovely citron. The dress flattered our figure, with its gathers at the top, sleek skirt and fun fishtail. And the soon-to-hit resort collection is to die for, including a rippling ball-gown skirt made of 18 yards of teal silk satin.
Obando--J.C. to his friends--makes perfect attention-getting clothes for women who are too elegant, and dare we say grown-up, for any sort of fashion vulgarity. For these ladies, it’s Grecian goddess all the way.
