We'll admit it: Some of our closest friends like to knit. We do, too, but are frustrated by our grasp of only basic skills. How many times can you give a basic stockinette-stitch scarf for Christmas and expect warm thanks?
So we're excited to up our game at this weekend's Vogue Knitting Live. The Hyatt Regency Century Plaza promises to be mobbed with local crafters browsing premium yarns and accessories and hobnobbing with celebrity "knitterati" including Inside Edition host and craft-book author Deborah Norville.
More than 100 workshops and lectures last from an hour to all day. These include yarn basics, making seams and creating a zigzag scarf (take that, Missoni!) as well as techniques such as Japanese stitch symbolism and entrelac.
Encouragingly, a Beginner's Lounge will be hosted by Vickie Howell, the cute star of HGTV's Knitty Gritty. We'll be stopping in to audit sessions in knitting and crocheting, in case we've forgotten our basics.
Event passes range from $20 to the multi-class $739 ticket (which includes entry to the gala dinner). We're thinking it's a good investment, because if we get started now, we can make wow-worthy gifts in time for the holidays.
