Ready to make camp friends? Here’s how your weekend will play out: First, you’ll be greeted upon arrival at the Ace with fresh cold-pressed juice.
You’ll meet the three organizers of the event--from left, Tait Chatmon, Stacy Bernstein and Karen Kimmel--who believe that creativity is an essential tool for life and dreamed up Crafting Community to encourage that spirit through art, curated design, fitness and plain old fun.
Grown-ups will want the kids to share Karen Kimmel’s abstract stencils with them--they’re so free-form and groovy that they appeal to all ages.
Have you heard? The latest vacation rage is camp for grown-ups. We?re fans of handicrafts and camaraderie, but we?ll pass on the cabins. (And frankly, we?d miss our kids.) So we?re traveling en famille to the Crafting Community weekend at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, a crafts-centric and recreation getaway where our kids will be busy making things and we?ll be enjoying a glass of rosé with the other grown-ups, nestled into sheepskin seats around the campfire.
Crafting Community is the bright idea of Karen Kimmel, a design consultant whose Atwater Village-based team turns out everything from corporate branding (familiar with a little company called Nike?) to stencils. A few years ago, mother-of-two Kimmel hosted a getaway for five families. The idea caught on and now 120 families will take over the Ace from October 4 to 6 (two-night family packages start at $1,500; tickets are selling out fast).
We?re looking forward to fun family time and are equally excited to hobnob with übertalented artisans and designers. We?ll learn about knotting from Tanya Aguiñiga (she makes these cuffs), craft leather with Clare Vivier (love her bags) and hand-stamp textiles with Rachel Craven (adore her table linens).
And if the kids fall asleep early? More sea-salt-and-Mexican-chocolate s?mores for us.
