The entrance to Chris Barrett's Santa Monica design studio is anchored by a chesterfield sofa upholstered in Big Sur.
Barrett's newest design is called Muscari and was inspired by a trip to Morocco. It works as a pillow, or even...
For your consideration, the tale of one woman?s obsession: Back in 2009, designer Chris Barrett was painting some abstracts at home. (You know, the way you do when you?re not creating interiors for Charlize Theron.) She imagined her paintings as outdoor fabrics--and then embarked on a yearlong global quest that led her to an artist-run mill in Switzerland, the only place that knows how to weave super-soft all-weather fabrics.
Angeleno indoor-outdoor dwellers can rejoice over Barrett?s non-scratchy outdoor textiles (we?re swooning over her latest, the hand-stamped Muscari print). Her polyesters, cottons, linens and even velvets are mold- and water-resistant as well as UV-rated. When we recently visited her Santa Monica studio, each swatch she handed us was softer than the last.
The 40 patterns and colors of Barrett?s collection look great mixed and matched, thanks to their creator?s seasoned artistic eye--from the expressive hand-stamping of Montecito to the shimmering pointillism of Cambria to the chrysanthemum-inspired Big Sur. Competitively priced at around $45 per yard for solids and $100 for prints, the textiles are versatile. For example, Barrett?s recent orders have ranged from 77 yards for a set of indoor curtains to yardage for the upholstery on a new yacht.
