The Maui resort, reinvented
In a grassy flat on the far side of Maui, there's a semicircle of villas scattered along pristine Hamoa Beach. It's peaceful, Pacific and now home to a new destination named Travaasa Hana, a resort with customizable course loads of adventure, culinary, culture, fitness and wellness.
Think of it as vacation college, with easy A's.
Even though it's a new resort, Travaasa Hana's spacious accommodations and spa have long been on the radar of luxury travelers--it is the former and fabled Hotel Hana-Maui. In June, the place reopened under new management (there's a Travaasa Austin, too), offering lots of programs for multitasking type-A guests, all with a dash of authenticity.
Adventure junkies set their core muscles to work by stand-up paddling in Hana Bay or tackling an Outward Bound obstacle course; foodies take a class in tropical-fruit juicing or fish preparation; culture devotees learn cast-net fishing. Fitness buffs practice lua, the ancient Hawaiian martial art; wellness courses skew toward breath work and meditation.
Now that our fall workload is starting to ramp up, Travaasa Hana is our new happy image of the last resort.
