Stage an outdoor screening
Angelenos love outdoor entertaining almost as much as we love the movies. Why not combine the two and throw an alfresco home screening party?
It's easy: First you order a video projector (from $99). Delivered to your door, it easily hooks up to a computer. You can also rent a screen, but a white sheet or tablecloth strung between two trees works, too.
Next you want to make sure guests get comfy, so lay down a zigzag series of carpets and blankets, Marrakech-souk style. We like the outdoor carpets ($89) at beloved Silverlake garden store Potted. Toss around piles of outdoor throw pillows, say, from Pottery Barn ($20) and hang a few lanterns from the trees. (We're eyeing these from Anthropologie, $28.) And don't forget to have a few blankets (from Potted, $275) ready for the evening chill.
Then, while guests are lounging with their cocktails and canapés, start a classic Los Angeles film such as Neil Simon's 1978 comedy California Suite or Steve Martin's wry 1991 film L.A. Story. Then let the evening unfold with bits of dialogue, laughter and a soundtrack of cicadas.
