Parisian prestige lands on the Pacific
Living so near the coast, we've always loved the waves, but lately our favorite waves are made of silk. Designer Alber Elbaz's satiny rivulets of tucking and gathering, created for fashion house Lanvin, found a home on Rodeo Drive in February; now his designs are available further west at Malibu Village's just-opened Lanvin boutique.
The mirrored, zebra-rug adorned space is tiny--only 600 square feet--but it's rich with the silk charmeuse dresses and caftans that have become the 50-year-old Frenchman's design signature. Ruby, plum and jade tones are juxtaposed with black skirts, trousers and jackets.
The store specializes in Elbaz's more casual designs; prices range from $200 to $4,000. Currently half the stock--summery T-shirts, tops and other separates--is 30 percent off. We like the idea of rolling in to pick up a frock--the current selection evokes the 1970s cool of photographer Guy Bourdin--for a surfside cocktail party.
And we love that it's the only Lanvin store where you need to watch where you step as you leave, lest a wet-suited surfer mar your new silk togs as he drip-dries in the sun.
