En Soie's gingham print adorns an array of tabletop items, from place mats ($25) to bowls ($55 to $270).
In our mind, we've art-directed a picnic using these gingham pillows ($80 to $110), quilt ($850) and patchwork balls ($49).
Sunset Boulevard just got a little sunnier with the opening of En Soie, a bright, Swiss-designed clothing and home-goods store.
French for “in silk,” En Soie opened its flagship Zurich boutique 30 years ago, selling silk goods and silk-blended textiles. From place mats to shift dresses, the stateside shop is a madcap circus of prints; we’re especially charmed by large scarves hung on the wall like artwork, a hipper version of framed Hermès scarves.
Prices are all over the map, from a playful $5 pom-pom hair tie to a sleek leather key chain that fetches $120. Gingham-printed ceramic pitchers (from $105) would be a cheery way to pour afternoon lemonade or a sweet repository for some flowers, and we’ve found our new favorite hostess gift: a $15 bottle of Malbec-Cabernet blend from the owner’s family vineyard in Argentina wrapped in a cute reusable $3 gingham wine sack.
The owners of the Los Angeles outpost, Elenore Meier and her husband, Rafael Palacio Illingworth, are the daughter and son-in-law of the En Soie founder. The family decided to make Los Angeles their first U.S. store, reasoning that such bold colors and playful designs fit a city in which people wear and decorate with rainbow hues year-round (unlike in rainy Switzerland). Thanks to them, our life just got a little brighter.
