During the gray days of winter, we?re looking for a little sartorial cheer to liven up our jeans-and-jacket uniform. So when we came upon Ermie, a local artist-designer?s collection of dresses and separates, we felt as though we?d captured a sunny day for our closet.
Ermie is the creation of Highland Park-based printmaker Jennifer Parry Dodge. Dodge was raised in Iowa, which explains her quest to capture the brilliant colors and light of Los Angeles. She starts with a photograph of the sunset from her front yard or a rag rug, then manipulates it in Photoshop to make unique, conversation-starting textiles.
We love Dodge?s simple shapes for their wearability (they drape beautifully over your body) and layerability--we?re wearing this knit maxi dress with a turtleneck and tights now, then by itself when the weather warms. Our favorite is a dress made from raw silk yardage that?s been recycled from used drop cloths.
You can shop Ermie dresses (from $275 to $385) at Echo Park?s Myrtle boutique and Ermie?s online shop, where you will find other arty offerings like silk tees ($175) and indigo leggings ($49). Comfy and sunny, Ermie designs are our new happy place.
