Woodshop for grown-ups
There?s something reassuring and relaxing about working with our hands. We?re excited to find a place where professional designers teach hands-on woodworking classes that yield household objects to treasure.
Knowhow Shop is a Highland Park-based fabrication shop and design studio. UCLA architecture graduates Justin Rice and Kagan Taylor operate their large loft headquarters as a design/build studio for professionals that also offers public classes. Here you can learn everything from safety basics to pro techniques such as laser cutting (from collaborator Manny Torres of design studio 2ndwnd) and CNC routing (machine carving and shaping from a digital file or model).
What appeals to us most is these fellows? dedication to teaching newbies. Knowhow Shop is holding daylong classes in making a sturdy wooden garden bench on February 16 and 17 ($150) and beautiful food-safe wooden cooking utensils on March 9 and 10 ($165). Since all classes include materials, students don?t have to haunt lumberyards and maybe wind up with the wrong materials.
After your Knowhow instruction is over, you can keep your woodworking going at Community Woodshop in Atwater Village for as little as $130 a month. Think of it as the high school woodshop class you never had a chance to take.
