Retro-cool styling meets contemporary titanium-and-acetate construction in these frames from Whiteout & Glare, $400.
Dr. York Optical sells select vintage frames including this Christian Dior style ($300), which is stylistically echoed in Tom Ford's sunglass collection.
We thought we?d seen every frame under the sun until we stopped into the new Dr. York Optical shop.
The skinny West Third storefront guarded by a handsome golden retriever, the shop mascot Renzo, is the first satellite of a year-old store in Mexico City. Its selection of sunglasses and reading specs is as sexy, colorful and sophisticated as that lively city.
We were amazed by brands we?d never heard of before but instantly loved, like Marcello Mastroianni-ready pairs made by Roman brands Luca Gnecchi Ruscone and Res/Rei. Our sporty nature responded to offerings from German brand Whiteout & Glare, whose novel marriage of superstrong titanium and lightweight acetate has won them a prestigious design award. And delightfully owlish spectacles from Sweden?s Oscar Magnuson deliver big style in a lightweight frame.
But perhaps our favorite discovery is the fresh color combos (tangerine and cream, acid green and blue) and jazzy shapes from Caroline Abram, a young Senegalese woman designing in Paris.
Most frames are $300 to $400, and that price tag carries with it a bit of extra style security--Dr. York Optical?s policy is to sell only one of each frame per city.
