You survived the obligation-packed, emotionally freighted holidays and New Year’s Eve, so here’s your reward: surf, sand and song in Baja California.
Beginning next Thursday and running weekends through January, the small Mexican arts town of Todos Santos is hosting the Todos Santos Music Festival, a series of concerts organized and underwritten by Peter Buck, the former guitarist for R.E.M. This year, festival highlights include cult English musician Robyn Hitchcock, Mexican-American singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo and American indie tunesmith Joseph Arthur (who we’ve loved since his music accompanied a heartbreak on TV’s The O.C.)
Shows are held nightly at the Hotel California or in the Todos Santos Town Plaza. Ticket prices range from $15 general admission to $95 VIP passes. Though advance tickets are already sold out online, we’re booking a room at either the smallish beachside Rancho Pescadero or a property listed on Baja.com, then stopping by the festival office after we’ve checked in, since organizers tell us tickets open up nearer to showtime.
Proceeds go to the Palapa Society, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing art, medical care and more to area children. So we’re feeling pretty good about indulging ourselves in Baja--and enjoying a post-performance tequila at hosting Hotel California.
