Hardcore (but luxe) coastal retreats
Southern California's hills are purpose-built for the toughest workout you'll ever love: a week-long, hiking boot camp.
But such retreats are usually more grunge (bunk beds, group showers) than glam. Now a pair of area resorts have created a new fitness getaway: the luxe boot camp.
The Ranch at Live Oak Malibu has 15 tasteful, private cottages with en-suite bathrooms and queen-size beds. Guests delight in grown-on-site organic vegetables, artfully prepared to satisfy--even without alcohol, caffeine or processed sugars. Massages help you recover from the 10 hours of fitness classes, yoga and hiking every day (one week all-inclusive, $5,600).
At Blue Pearl Laguna in Laguna Beach, the dozen rooms are minimalist, and the program includes yoga, some 60-odd miles of hiking, daily meditation and chakra-healing practices. Like at the Ranch, nothing is processed: Meals include garden-grown vegetables as well as co-founder Katresha's signature, nutrient-rich healing broth (one week all-inclusive, $3,800).
Many guests lose more than 10 inches overall after a week's stay, but both programs emphasize re-training guests to eat right and exercise so that future wellness won't be such an uphill climb.
