Opening the screen door to Rene Holguin's North La Cienega store, RTH, feels like stepping into a rustic cabin.
First, there are the smells of summer: tanned leather, cedar and fresh cotton. Next, the well-worn bandannas sewn into scarves ($50 to $60). And finally, the cowhide necklaces and flower pins (from $50) tacked on a bulletin board look like a craft project, albeit a very skillful one.
A native Texan, Holguin learned leather crafting from his boot-maker father, then earned his fashion stripes at Ralph Lauren and Levi's. His RTH collection showcases this heritage with leather satchels in a rainbow of hues and finishes ($400 to $675), preppy-arty white smocks ($90 to $180) and Liberty-print floral scarves ($70). We especially like the envelope-like MacBook Air covers (from $80), which double as large clutches.
Most of Holguin's handcrafted pieces are unisex and limited edition. Currently, we're loving a selection of azure tapestries ($200) made by Hmong tribeswomen. As table covers or shawls against a night chill, the beautiful fabrics make us happy campers.
