A new juice bar with a starry clientele
Last week, Melrose Avenue had a red-carpet opening, but Drew Barrymore and Ben Stiller weren’t turning out for a film premiere--it was a juice bar debut. They milled around their nutritionist, Kimberly Snyder, the brain trust of the new Glow BIO bar.
We were skeptical: What could anyone add to the scrum of area juice bars? Plenty, it turns out, since Glow BIO (“Balance Inside Out”) has a range of juices, smoothies and cleanses for everyone from the newbie juicer to the experienced raw foodist. Snyder’s a clinical nutritionist and author of the best-selling, upbeat The Beauty Detox Solution, and her regimen includes surprisingly tasty drinks, such as the cornerstone Green Glowing Smoothie (nicknamed the “GGS”; $8.75), which is the first fruit-and-greens mix we’ve tried that didn’t taste, well, just wrong.
Besides nine smoothies, there are $4 shots (like a probiotic-laced lemonade and a de-bloating cranberry-and-Stevia blend) and juices starting at $4.75. We appreciated the knowledgeable staff, who demurred when we wanted to add protein to our GGS, explaining that it wasn’t compatible with the smoothie’s quick-absorption formula. Not only that, but Snyder’s menu proves she’s open-minded: Though her book counsels against caffeine, she sells fair trade coffee for those times when bee pollen is not enough.
