It’s the start of the holiday season, and there’s lots to do: parties to attend, friends to catch up with, gifts to buy. So we’re making multitasking fun tomorrow night by grabbing a chum and hitting up the Second Saturday Gallery Night in Highland Park.
From 7 to 10 p.m., more than two dozen galleries and shops around York Boulevard are open late. The work on display ranges from exquisite stained glass at Judson Studios and museum-quality pottery at Toros Gallery to drawings and other hanging art at This Los Angeles and the Cactus Gallery. (Don’t miss the Day of the Dead-inspired paintings.) There’s a full directory of events up at NELA Art, the organization dedicated to transforming Highland Park into the next SoHo (just without the crowds and high rents).
Besides shopping for art and home decor throughout the neighborhood, this Saturday there’s a special one-night holiday bazaar at Platform featuring the work of artists like crafting guru Cathy Callahan and textiles maker Ermie. You can even pick up fresh bouquets from Arrange.
We’re planning to stop by after a bite at one of the neighborhood vegetarian or Vietnamese joints. But we’re also leaving lots of time for browsing. After all, as artist Barbara Kruger said: “When I hear the word ‘culture,’ I take out my checkbook.”
