Flat Out Cool
Groovy shoes from Beatrice Valenzuela
We love putting together an attractive outfit that doesn?t look as though we?re trying too hard to be trendy, spendy or sexy. One sartorial solution to such casual appeal: flat sandals and moccasins from Echo Park resident Beatrice Valenzuela.
A hairstylist by trade, Valenzuela has been dipping her toe into the cobbler biz via a self-titled shoe line. The Mexico City native designs the shoes from her home in Echo Park, then has their recycled leather uppers and upcycled auto-tire soles hand-stitched in Mexico. The resulting footwear is half hippie, half sophisticated world traveler. We especially like her supersoft Cholas style ($220), a deconstructed Mary Jane, and her Combinados design ($220), a funked-up desert boot. Her signature is the Brazil ($190), a lace-up sandal that suggests Roman gladiator--by way of Mexico City.
Valenzuela?s shoes are seen on fashionable folks all over town and are sold at chichi boutiques like Creatures of Comfort next to beloved Rachel Comeys and Isabel Marants. Soft, stylish and a little exotic: These shoes are our new style avatar.
