Painted Bird’s chic crocheted espadrilles
We love great warm-weather shoes and have noticed that the best ones often are associated with the special place where they are made. For example, there are the Capri sandals popularized by Jackie Kennedy, or those gladiator sandals that can?t help but call to mind Greece.
Now Laguna Beach has its own signature footwear, the Painted Bird.
This new collection of espadrilles alchemizes elements we've always thought of as a bit kitsch--crochet, bright colors and ankle ties--into a sophisticated look that?s garnered praise from style bloggers. Laguna-based designers Jennifer Samson and Nicole Halpern have used their experience in fashion, PR and design to create cute little flats ($72) with soft silk-nylon tops, leather insoles and durable rubber soles in solid colors and geometric prints.
Our favorites have ankle ties that recall the classic French espadrille. Worn with a striped dress, we?ll be feeling practically Parisian at our local plage.
Because Painted Bird launched this summer, we?re keen on getting two pairs from the debut collection (summer solids are currently 20 percent off). The plan: Wear one pair long into the Indian summer, and put the other away as a collector?s item. After all, we?re predicting that these will become SoCal fashion icons.
