American heritage style--that subset of classic sportswear that celebrates traditional, durable clothes from denim to dusters--is having a moment right now. And we’re heading to Abbot Kinney’s new Gant Rugger boutique to get our fix of a storied U.S. brand.
Gant first became big when the New Haven-based company sold its well-made men’s shirts, with a then-innovative back locker-loop, to 1950s Ivy Leaguers. Today the sportswear company has re-introduced that same Yale co-op shirt in Madras, stripes and, our favorite, oxford-cloth blue ($115). They’re made for men, but we’re wearing a couple we picked up at the boutique as everything from swimsuit cover-ups to loosely tied blouses.
The shop carries two lines: the juniors-focused Gant Rugger and, most interesting to us, the Gant by Michael Bastian line. In this collection, the designer blends his East Coast upbringing with his love of preppy style.
