Training flowering or fruit-bearing vines to grow vertically on trellises is a gardening tradition, from grape arbors in the Old Country to espaliered apples at Mount Vernon. Now local sculptors have revolutionized the practice with Terra Trellis, a line of mod artistic gardening structures.
Terra Trellis products--which are designed by the team responsible for Terra Sculpture outdoor modern art--allow vines, climbers, perennials and edibles to grow up, around, inside and behind them, in a totally gorgeous fashion.
We can imagine climbing white roses on the 5-foot-high tuteur in aubergine ($279) or heirloom tomatoes caged in a 58-inch bubble trellis in leaf ($349). Even commonplace bougainvillea would look distinctive wrapped around an 80-inch walk-through circle arbor ($840), the real showstopper of the collection.
Each über-durable piece is made from hand-welded steel, powder-coated in one of seven colors including an oxidized natural hue. Made to order here in Los Angeles, they can be purchased on the company?s website; examples are on view at Potted, the trendy Atwater Village gardening shop.
Consider it a new way to successfully gild the lily.
