Hermosa might be on the more laid-back side of town, but that doesn?t mean South Bay residents don?t get festive. In the spirit of Venice?s famed First Fridays and La Brea?s new Second Saturdays, downtown Hermosa recently launched its own version on the first Thursday of every month.

From 5 to 8 p.m. (the next one is July 5), participating shops, restaurants, art galleries, salons and gyms offer extended hours, happy hours and special discounts. On past Thursdays, Zane?s served $5 glasses of wine and appetizer deals, the Spyder store hosted surf movie screenings with free popcorn and Paciugo Gelato and Caffé handed out free gelato to kids.

The must-stop is Gum Tree, an expertly curated beach-chic boutique with a healthy adjoining café. Perched on a corner next to the Pacific, the 1911 bungalow bursts with sea-patterned pillows, leather aquamarine ottomans and aquatic-themed jewelry and gifts. At First Thursdays, the Gum Tree usually offers complimentary sangria and in-store discounts.

Next Thursday, singer and ukulele player Jack Tracy will perform--and we?ll be checking the Hermosa First Thursday Facebook page to see what else is lined up.
