You know Clare Vivier’s work even if you don’t yet know her name. Those simple wallets and cross-body minibags at Steven Alan? She made those. That neon-striped tote that blew out of Anthropologie? Ditto. The zippered clutch that looks like a pencil case that went to finishing school? You guessed it--a Clare Vivier design.
Last week, the Silverlake resident opened a flagship store on Sunset Boulevard that’s as bright and cheery as her designs. The small shop has all our favorite stock, like the mini sac ($168), La Tropézienne tote ($386) and the new flat striped clutch ($184). While we’re jazzed that we can get immediate gratification by walking out with our bags--no more waiting for online orders!--we’re thinking of leaving our acquisitions for monogramming ($50).
All the bags are stacked on white shelves and multilevel wooden stands in the Barbara Bestor-designed interior. And there are bits of whimsy, like artist Leanne Shapton’s hand-painted trompe l’oeil books, or a vase filled with souvenir matchbooks.
We’ve noticed that Vivier’s items show up on the arms of confident, fashionable women: People who know that their own initials--not some fancy designer logo--are all the status they need.
