A signature perfume can be a woman's calling card. The trouble is finding one. So we were thrilled to discover MCMC Fragrances, whose gorgeous, unique line of artisanal perfumes and custom-made fragrances take the work out of finding the perfect scent.
Made in small batches and bottled by hand in her Brooklyn studio, Anne McClain's perfumes are inspired by personal experiences--like a vacation to Maine or a volunteer trip to Mexico--and blend classic scents (orange blossom and lavender) with unusual notes (leather and thyme).
All of McClain's perfumes smell divine, but our favorite is Kept, a romantic combination of red roses and black tea ($110 for 50 milliliters).
Now, McClain is sharing her secrets with the rest of us and offering private, perfume-making workshops ($250 per person, with a 10 percent discount if you sign up with a friend). Students will learn about the science behind fragrance-making, get access to 75 blending scents and leave with 50 milliliters of custom-made perfume in a pretty, glass bottle.
If you don't want to venture across the Brooklyn Bridge, McClain will craft a custom perfume based on your favorite scents (prices vary).
Not ready to commit to a fragrance? Try a sample kit of McClain's five best sellers ($18). Your only dilemma will be choosing which full-sized bottle to buy.
