Local bars tend to skew young, so we usually skip the latest bottle-service disco. But a new bar on Melrose called Pour Vous just got us excited about going out for drinks again.
Behind a pastel door that evokes a Parisian hotel particulier, Pour Vous is the latest project from the exacting cocktail builders behind local hot spots Harvard and Stone and La Descarga. French travel inspired the decor, which includes a glass domed ceiling, flickering fire, tufted banquettes, veined mirrors, crystal chandeliers and lots of candles. Charmingly, there's a retro train trolley repurposed as a photo-op-ready smoking lounge; recently, a friend happened upon Jon Hamm enjoying a cigar there.
Libations skew French, including nine by-the-glass champagne and wine offerings. According to general manager Steve Livigni, Pour Vous's 28 cocktails took a year to craft, with an emphasis on French distillates such as cognac, Armagnac and eaux-de-vie like raspberry-flavored framboise and Calvados. Oysters, cheese and chocolate are soon to be added to the menu.
For now, we're keen on the Moulin Rouge ($16), an homage to the bubbly strawberry drink quaffed at Le Baron, the classic Paris nightclub. This pretty red drink begs a toast: Vive la difference.
