Energetic use of color is a signature of Kishani Perera's projects, such as the bright pillows livening up this gray sofa.
Shopping trips to Olvera Street in L.A.'s Little Mexico turned up crosses, candleholders and other objects for a bedroom for a woman who loves Mexican culture.
Because a bench or couch would have needed too much space on this narrow balcony, Perera opted for a long built-in stucco bench.
For the past year, interior designer Kishani Perera?s Beverly Boulevard shop, Rummage, has been a feel-good space to stop in and get interior design ideas. From the decorative possibilities of vintage books (from $40) to a knockout selection of custom sconces (from $700), we always find something to covet.
Now we?re poring over Perera?s new book, Vintage Remix. The lushly photographed coffee-table tome includes introductions from Molly Sims and Gary Oldman, whose living spaces are featured in the book. We especially love Sims?s New York apartment, furnished from a shopping trip to Paris flea markets.
The real draw of the book is its wide range of interiors, from small apartments to splashy homes--and how it shows modern, vintage, custom and thrift pieces all blended to make a cohesive, personalized and warm home.
And unlike with most design books, we?re able to keep the magic of its contents alive with trips to Rummage, where we can start imbuing our home with some of Perera?s flair for color. Perhaps we?ll buy a mauve vintage kilim remnant ($400), an olive-green ikat pillow ($200) or even splurge on a pink upholstered Dorothy Draper chair ($1,200).
