Working It Out
Cultish fitness apparel comes to Malibu
Now that Lululemon yoga-inspired workout togs have taken over Los Angeles, we’re poised for the next big thing in fitness apparel. Remember this name: Lorna Jane, a new Malibu shop that sells cool workout wear with a side of optimism.
The little boutique in the Malibu Lumber Yard is the first U.S. outpost of a 122-store Australian chain created 21 years ago by fitness instructor Lorna Jane Clarkson. Her designs go from workout to coffee with the girls: The Hepburn top ($79) looks like an upscale tee with a cutout back; the Excel skort ($79) is a stylish alternative to shorts. And we’d layer the Maxine Hooded Puffa vest ($156) over a T-shirt and jeans on a casual night out.
What’s (improbably) charmed us most about Lorna Jane is its inspirational singlets ($36), emblazoned with mottos such as “Strength, Courage, Confidence.” Paired with the brand’s new website, Move, Nourish, Believe--which is filled with relentlessly peppy content like fitness videos, recipes and forums on self-improvement--we sense that these Aussies have really drunk the Kool-Aid of well-being.
Wearing a cute Lorna Jane outfit, we’re feeling pretty positive, too.
