Rough-hewn shelves hold Portuguese Mateus dishware and vintage-looking oil portraits painted by a local artist.
We're always collecting treasures on our international jaunts, but sometimes we're so busy with other activities that we don't fit in enough shopping.
Now we can get our cargo-cult jollies without leaving home by browsing Zouk in Santa Monica. Opened last September by sisters (one local, one living in Australia), the store carries furniture, tabletop, bath and other home goods the two have collected on their travels together. And with each sale, Zouk devotes three percent to the customer's choice of charity.
Highlights include huge Cambodian silk pillows with paillettes ($222), Portuguese-made Mateus dishware (from $22) and vivid square Moroccan candleholders made of wax (from $32). We appreciate that the shop includes a wide range of prices, from trinkets costing under a hundred dollars to a $2,400 Persian rug. After time spent browsing, we're inspired to add more color to our home decor--since it all looks so tasteful and inviting here.
We'll be using Zouk for special birthday and hostess gifts. After all, charity begins at home.
