Rainbow tint those winter blues with zingy colors and patterns from Millworks, the newest shop-in-shop at retailer H.D. Buttercup. Los Angeles textile maker Andrea Bernstein aims to brighten your couch or bed with graphic designs inspired by nature--specifically, flora native to southern California.

We recognize our beloved outdoors in Bernstein's prints; indeed, she painted the outlines of her neighbor's succulent plants for one fabric, and flowers and vines adorn others. Bernstein's energetic aesthetic--think Marimekko meets Dr. Seuss's The Lorax--was recently included in LACMA's ongoing "California Design, 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way" exhibit, including gift shop tote bags ($24).

The happiness-inducing properties of Bernstein's designs are obvious to anyone who sees how kids are immediately drawn to Millworks' spot near H.D. Buttercup's front entrance. Prices are relatively cheery, too, with pillows ranging from $58 to $78 and bedding from $55 to $260. The extra-feel-good bonus: Everything is made locally in southern California.
