And now the race has begun--but not for the SAGs, Oscars or seeming hundreds of other awards. The real contest is who looks best at the ceremonies, and we've discovered a new dress shop that's got you covered.

Katharine Kidd is a new jewel box of a boutique on San Vicente in Brentwood. It's next to classic Cali casual-wear purveyors Madison and Ron Herman, but it couldn't be more different. Kidd's stuff is über-girlie: Silver wallpaper is set off by a circular velvet couch and chandelier. Racks of her silk dresses stand like princesses in groups of silver, black, white and pistachio.

Most dresses cost between $500 and $1,000 and are knee-length, a more modern and versatile length than floor (though Kidd is happy to create custom longer versions). We're impressed by the designer's ability to create structured attire--such as the gray mesh-and-lace dress worn recently by Emmy Rossum--that's equally flattering and comfortable.

Blingy baubles by Dannijo, Colette Malouf and Erickson Beamon round out the shop's mix. Getting decked out in Katharine Kidd's dresses is as good as taking home a statuette. Almost.
