We like to give gifts that benefit charities and are constantly looking for new ways to spread the love. If we can get our shopping fix at the same time, so much the better.
That's why we're making tracks this holiday season to Made by DWC, a gift shop and café that benefits the Downtown Women's Center. At the DWC, more than 70 homeless women live on-site while hundreds more visit each day for meals, doctor visits and job training.
The shop's sunny and cheerful vibe makes us happy to visit, as does the wide selection of gifts. The store sells vintage accessories as well as new gift items such as fragrant soy soaps. Our favorite offerings are the cool crafts made by resident women, including potted succulents, charming felt Christmas tree ornaments and journals fashioned from up-cycled hardcover books.
There's a café attached that sells pasta, sandwiches and tempting s'mores cookies to go with Groundwork espresso. And the already valuable experience is made even richer by knowing that all profits are used to pay for DWC's operations.
