Short Order, Fukuburger
Hollywood's Fukuburger; a Short Order burger

Sometimes you have a craving for red meat but can't get psyched about fast food, even with our city's wealth of burgers. (But we still love you, In-N-Out and Astro Burger.)

Now two recently opened burger joints bring sexy (and beefy) back. First, there's Short Order at the Farmers Market at the Grove. This open-air patio with a second-story semi-enclosed loft has been thronged since it opened three weeks ago. We like Nancy's Backyard Burger ($13), with bacon, Comté, avocado and spicy mayo that sets off its tomato, onion and iceberg lettuce--as well as the cocktails from an award-winning mixologist.

Less chi-chi but still fun is Fukuburger, a new fast-casual iteration of a popular Las Vegas food truck. The F-word means "lucky" in Japanese, the culture that inspired the menu and decor: Walls of graffiti art and Japanese samurai wallpaper set off red-lacquer picnic tables. Six burgers ($7 each) include the Tamago, which comes with wasabi mayo and fried egg.

Comfortable and casual, with a side of fries: We're already putting these spots on our New Year's Day hangover short list.
