We're trending chemical-free in our diet and our homes, checking websites to screen everything from cosmetics to food. But with so many supposedly organic and eco-friendly products out there, how do we choose the best ones?
Now we just stop into the new Beverly Boulevard location of the Detox Market. This minimalist-chic personal-care and home store is a satellite of the popular Venice shop that sells unique, organic and toxin-free apothecary items and gifts. Best of all, inventory is rigorously edited, so we're not overwhelmed by too much scent and are able, for example, to enjoy the artificial coloring- and petrochemical-free French perfumes from Honoré des Prés.
Inside this clean white loft, we discovered hits such as the Rare El'Ements trio of silicone-free shampoo, conditioner and hair oil ($110); paraben- and flouride-free Vitacare toothpaste ($6); and the Australian mom-and-baby line Mini Organics, including a superfine jojoba ($30) that makes a great all-ages skin moisturizer and bath oil.
And be sure to ask the knowledgeable staff to explain the Odacité skin care line developed by the shop owners. Made up of aloe vera-based preservative-free products, it's kept refrigerated to preserve freshness ($29 to $120).
Thanks to the Detox Market, spring cleaning has come a little early.
