Best U Studio: Ballet class fun without the bleeding toes

Since when did exercising become synonymous with boot camp

If you’re in the mood for something more graceful, try one of West Hollywood’s new ballet-inspired studios. Each offers classes that stretch your limbs and back--and emphasize posture--so your muscles appear longer and leaner. Plus, with their isometrics, jumps and dance combinations, they’re as results-oriented as regular barre classes but way more entertaining.

Best U Studio In the first update of ballet technology since the Renaissance, a pair of Angeleno pals and a Pilates instructor invented a patent-pending, U-shaped weighted metal bar that’s used throughout their signature class. You clip the bar onto the wall and clutch it for balance while you do high kicks and relevés--then you detach it and use it in fun dances around the room. Best U Studio, 931 N. Fairfax, West Hollywood; 323-650-2378

Body by Simone is a branch of the New York studio founded by Simone De La Rue, a former Broadway dancer turned celeb trainer. She organizes the hour-long group sessions ($35) like a ballet class. You warm up with stretches facing a mirror, then follow in a few simple dance routines and finally grab a mat for floor exercises. We love the HTB (Hips, Thighs, Buns) class, which whittles off inches in weeks. Body by Simone, 8623-8625 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood; 310-360-0335
