Buy coffee that helps animal shelters
Two things we can’t live without: 1) our dog and 2) our morning coffee. So we’re feeling good about our latest find, Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co., which gives 20 percent of its revenue to shelters that help homeless dogs.
The company sells only organic free-trade coffees (two blends, four single-origins and one decaf). Our favorite is the Morning Walk, a flavorful light roast that’s not overly acidic but still has a full nutty flavor ($13.75 per pound). If you like a stronger coffee, opt for the Alpha Blend ($14 per pound), which has bold notes of vanilla, cocoa and nutmeg.
Flavor aside, what sets this coffee apart is that founder Jordan Karcher got the idea for the company from his dog, Molly. He discovered the brown-and-white Dalmatian pup at an adoption event he happened upon in Santa Monica, and the impulse adoption led him to help other pets.
Grounds & Hounds is available online and in a handful of area stores, such as Vicente Foods in Brentwood, Rainbow Acres in Culver City and Simons Market in Venice. We’re already enjoying it with our dog--as we drink it during our daily daybreak stroll.
