Lavender & Honey
In Pasadena, coffee calls for a toast.

There’s a lot of talk about toast lately. Some say that its appearance on fancy restaurant menus is pretentious silliness. We say, haters gonna hate. We’re gobbling up the stuff all over town, day till night. Here, our top places to order toast:

Lavender & Honey At this new espresso bar in Pasadena, start with a cortado made from local coffee beans. Then order the L & H toast ($3), which is covered with slices of goat cheese, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with the fragrant herb that gives the place its name. 1383 E. Washington Blvd., Pasadena; 626-529-5571

Sqirl Next up is lunch at the tiny Silverlake storefront turned hit café. Follow an uber-healthy brown-rice bowl topped with a fried egg with a sinful indulgence: a thick slab of brioche topped with chocolate ganache and nut butter ($7). 720 N. Virgil Ave.; 323-284-8147

Superba Snack Bar Finally, come evening, it’s time for a savory repast in Venice. This spot has a whole menu section devoted to toast. Opt for the flavor-bending choice of English peas, lardo, strawberries and mint ($9) or the house-cured gravlax, horseradish, lemon and sea salt ($12). To share with friends, get a charcuterie board with chicken liver mousse, porchetta, country pork terrine and--you guessed it--crunchy bread ($21). 533 Rose Ave., Venice; 310-399-6400
