Montauk is getting a reputation for many things these days: great stores, irritating weekenders and bars with a wait to get on the dance floor--we're looking at you, Ruschmeyer's. But one major highlight for us has been the influx of awesome taquerias. From lowbrow waffle tacos to highfalutin braised octopus varieties, we?ve rounded up the best ?Montauk-O? has to offer.
For the veggie: La Brisa de Tacombi The corn and poblano pepper taco is so outrageous at this Montauk newbie that even meat eaters will salivate over it. Made with Cotija cheese, it?s like having Mexican street corn in a shell. Pair it with their signature Paloma cocktail, a refreshing blend of tequila and grapefruit juice. 752 Montauk Highway, Montauk; 631-668-8338
For the epicurean: South Edison Whether you pop in for their popular happy hour or score a proper reservation, order one of the pulpo (octopus) tacos, por favor. Braised with olive oil and served with mushrooms, pickled red onion, roasted tomato, serrano pepper, crema and queso Cotija, this is one of the tastiest tacos in town. 17 S. Edison St., Montauk; 631-668-4200
For anyone who had too many ?Endless Summers? the night before: Lucky J?s The Austin, Texas-based chicken-and-waffles joint opened up shop on West Lake Drive, bringing its soulful Southern dishes to Montauk. Our favorite waffle tacos are the Grandma Andy, with bananas, peanut butter, Nutella and honey, and the Chili Cheese Fry, made with seasoned breakfast potatoes, cheddar cheese and sriracha. Oh, and did we mention it?s open all night long? 440 W. Lake Drive, Montauk, 631-668-8555
