A veteran shop offers affordable, unique pieces
When Obligato opened in East Hampton in 1985, it catered to the young fringe and glitter set. They must have been faithful customers, because nearly 30 years later, in a town filled with Ralph Lauren, J.Crew, Starbucks and more, the little shop is still open and flourishing.
Obligato’s appeal has recently broadened, and the fun pieces are geared to a more sophisticated clientele.
On the racks now: Jude Connally’s fresh preppy print shifts ($170 to $190), Bailey 44’s ladylike but form-fitting dresses that flatter women of any age ($145 to $198), a brown Costa Blanca faux leather and shearling cropped pilot’s vest ($138), a Mad Men–era snap-back white lace top by Dolce Vita ($180), a gold crocheted cardigan with sequins by Sister ($110) and lots of accessories including wax twine and metal toggle bracelets ($95).
Despite the stylish new items, Obligato hasn’t lost touch with its longtime customers. In addition to Minnie Rose’s long featherweight cardigans in charcoal, black, blue and lavender ($228), fans of the line can pick up a red poncho with fringe ($110). Plus, there’s an entire section for girls ages 7 to 16.
