Over the past few years, East Hampton?s organic cafe Babette?s has become the place to go for a beachy version of the power breakfast: Slimmed-down healthy-eating converts Bill Clinton and Alec Baldwin work the room, while Ron Perelman, Steven Spielberg and Russell Simmons fuel up on egg whites, whole-grain waffles and fresh juices.
Now Babette?s is pumping up its dinner scene, and you may find the room even more inviting by evening. Gone are the waiting lists and wraparound lines, the lighting is softened and the cozy room is hedged in outdoor tables that have morphed from bustling to romantic.
As for the food, the grilled shrimp with avocado, watermelon, and sesame-ginger-pineapple drizzle has such a contrast of vibrant tastes and textures that the flavors pop in your mouth. Meanwhile, fresh local halibut is served with a sweet and hearty roasted corn quinoa, and pan-roasted succulent free-range chicken is balanced with cauliflower puree, grilled asparagus and sautéed shiitake mushroom. Several vegetarian dishes have also been added to the menu, including sesame-crusted tofu with baby squash and brown rice.
To make the atmosphere even warmer, cap off your meal with organic wine or spike your fresh juice with vodka.
