A celebration of our favorite ’80s movie
The secret is out: We love books and we love movies. Luckily, the latest citywide literacy initiative, Big D Reads, caters to both with the first-ever festival dedicated to our favorite book-turned-movie, The Outsiders.
Here?s what you can expect if you stop by the free April 26 event at Klyde Warren Park:
To do: Spend the afternoon at an open chat with author S. E. Hinton and producer Gary Fredrickson (we hope they?ll dish about director Francis Ford Coppola), then check out a dramatic reading of the screenplay.
But the pièce de résistance is a dusk screening of the classic ?80s flick, which debuted the early acting chops of Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe (swooning now).
To eat: It wouldn?t be a true visit to Klyde Warren if we didn?t partake in the food-truck fare from Crazy Fish, Nammi, Abe?s Flavor Flave and Butcher?s Son (where we'll be ordering Nutella, peanut butter and bacon on a brioche). Prefer a restaurant not on wheels? There?s always nearby Savor and Lark on the Park.
To remember: How cute Tom Cruise was in his pre-Scientology days.
