Grab a snack at the Book Carriage & Coffee Shop in Roanoke.

Our area may be culturally rich, but as far as bookstores go, there aren?t tons of places where you?d want to kill five hours pawing your way through The Goldfinch.

That?s why we were so thrilled to discover these two off-the-radar nooks:

The Book Carriage & Coffee Shop Amid Roanoke?s restaurant row stands this charming two-story shop. Husband and wife Larry and Angie Granados decided to open the business after they realized their own collection of books was overflowing. The result, five years later, is a lovely, community-oriented bookstore (think a smaller-scale version of Austin?s BookPeople) that is the perfect place to lose yourself in a good read. Children?s and Texas regional books are a highlight here. (304 N. Oak St., Roanoke; 817-491-2858)

Lucky Dog Books Known for its collection of ?recycled books, movies and music,? this small chain offers an indie addendum to another popular used-book mecca. As with stores of this sort, trade-ins are welcome, as is man?s best friend. We were psyched to find an entire box of back issues of Architectural Digest. (Oak Cliff, East Dallas and Mesquite locations)
