Such Great Heights
Houston’s hottest neighborhood
Our sprawling neighbor four hours to the south (a.k.a. Houston) can be an overwhelming travel destination.
Our advice: Stick to one neighborhood at a time. Right now, we?re in love with the Heights, an area northwest of the city that?s brimming with trendy boutiques, buzzy restaurants and quirky events.
What to expect Full of funky craftsman-style bungalows, Victorian homes and warehouse-turned-retail spaces, the Heights is actually Houston?s oldest planned neighborhood.
When to go Though there?s never a bad time, we love First Saturdays, when the entire neighborhood is a virtual open house. The First Saturday Arts Market has live music, food trucks and nearly 40 canopied tents loaded with local art (and crafts). We?re particularly excited about the annual White Linen Night in August, when locals take to the streets clad entirely in linen.
Where to eat Start your day at Boomtown Coffee, an artisanal roaster that serves mean fried-egg breakfast tacos on additive-free nixtamal corn tortillas. And you can?t go wrong at Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar--the San Fran Crab Louis cold salad is like summer in a bite.
