Some places are synonymous with a healthy lifestyle (like Los Angeles and Vancouver), while others are mere blips on the fitness radar.
While we Texans are hardly a bunch of treadmill teetotalers, we’ll admit it: Sometimes our love of chips and queso gets the best of us.
That’s why we’re glad our state is home to Travaasa, a destination about 20 miles northwest of Austin that is sure to rein in your diet and reinvigorate your love of exercise and the outdoors with its slew of activities, from archery to zip lines.
Set high in the hills above Lake Travis (with an infinity-edged pool to prove it), the 70-room campus-style resort is nestled among a forest of live oaks. On a recent weekend we wound our way along paths lined with Mexican oregano to our Hill Country Honey Bee Massage and Body Treatment ($195). For a gloriously indulgent 80 minutes, our face and back were bathed in organic honey and ginger massage oil while our knots (thanks, desk job!) were kneaded into submission.
The next day we worked off dinner from the night before--Vital Farms chicken with polenta and asparagus, followed by a flourless chocolate cake--with a heart-pumping hike in the surrounding hills.
Travaasa Austin, 13500 Farm to Market Road 2769, Austin; 512-364-0061 or travaasa.com/austin. Rates start at $225 per night.
