Fit for a Lady
Oscar de la Renta’s designs for the White House
Couture and Dallas go together like First Ladies and Oscar de la Renta. And coincidentally enough, the George W. Bush Presidential Center has brought both to our area with Oscar de la Renta: Five Decades of Style.
What you?ll see The exhibit features extravagant gowns worn by not only three previous First Ladies (Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton and Nancy Reagan) but also presidential family members (remember those stunning designs from Jenna Bush Hager?s wedding?) and red-carpet-bound celebrities (it was De la Renta who catapulted Taylor Swift into the best-dressed category).
What will make you scream Oscar The gowns are, of course, the focal point, but it?s the beautiful story behind the goods that will keep you hooked. The Dominican Republic-born designer established his career in the 1950s under Balenciaga and quickly came into his own, becoming the first Dominican designer to lead a French couture house.
What to know before you go The fashionable partnership between the White House and Oscar de la Renta is on a hiatus of sorts. First Lady Michelle Obama prefers up-and-coming designers over famed couture design houses. It?s a First Lady?s prerogative, after all.
