The Godfrey Hotel
A spa treatment room at The Godfrey Hotel.

We’re not exactly sure how people have time for a spin class or a 60-minute peel during lunch. What about the time it takes to get there? What about making your hair presentable afterward? As it stands, we’re lucky to dash to our favorite salad spot and back.

But this week we desperately needed a massage, so we carved out 30 minutes in the middle of the day, with an extra 15 for travel time on either side, for the Warp Speed massage at the spa in the new Godfrey Hotel.

The Godfrey is an eye-catching, modern spot in River North--we predict the whole city will be cocktailing on its “urban roofscape” come spring--but its spa is an unassuming, intimate escape on the fifth floor.

After a lavender-water foot soak in the waiting area, we were led by our massage therapist, Julie, to a treatment room with a heated table made up in crisp white linens. Julie asked about our problem areas (shoulders and hips, check) and got down to business, working out our knots speedily and efficiently. (But not so fast that we couldn’t catch the smallest of catnaps.)

Forget the salad--that’s what we call a break.
