On the Chicago doughnut scene, the gourmet treats come pricey (try $39 for 12 maple-bacon Long Johns at one popular spot) and in many a wacko flavor (orangey dreamsicle, anyone?)

But now there’s finally a place that caters to the doughnut purists among us. A 50-year-old L.A. institution, Stan’s Donuts & Coffee, has just opened in Wicker Park.

The retro-cute shop is done up in sage green and pink, with a big communal table and a wall of rainbow-hued KitchenAid mixers just for fun.

We were relieved to find all of our favorite old-school flavors under the counter, alongside some more elaborate options. (Can your stomach handle a chocolate, chocolate-chip and peanut-butter pocket first thing in the morning?)

We tried a luscious, graham-crackery, Biscoff cream pocket ($2.50) just so we could say we branched out, but it was the standards ($1.75 each) that really won us over. The chocolate glazed had just the right icing-to-doughnut ratio, and a simple plain glazed was so soft and moist, we don’t know why anyone would want to go with anything fancier.
