Adios, self-control: Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is now open in Lakeview.
We waited all summer for this. Now it?s 70 degrees and cloudy--fall looms on the other side of this weekend--and the ice cream spot we?ve been dreaming of is finally open.
Sure, the timing?s off, but that wasn?t enough to stop us from lining up to try Jeni?s Splendid Ice Creams, the cult-favorite brand with a new ?scoop shop? in Lakeview.
??Founder Jeni Britton Bauer is a pretty Midwestern blonde who once whipped up pastries in a French restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, before hatching the idea to make ice cream using local produce and cream from grass-fed Ohio cows. (This was in 2002, way before the rest of us hopped on the farm wagon.)
Once inside her sparkling white Southport store, we agonized over which of the freakishly delicious-sounding flavors to try before settling on a small sundae ($6.50) of the following: One scoop of the Milkiest Chocolate in the World (yup, actual name), one scoop of purple-swirled Brambleberry Crisp, extra-bitter hot fudge sauce and a crunchy, buttery topping called Salty Graham Gravel.
We paid and walked around the block taking bite after bite. In the car, we scraped our spoon against the cardboard container, hoping for one last nibble of fudge.
??Heaven hath freezeth over, and we?ll be back in snow boots.
