Did a gas lantern kicked over by a cow really start the Great Chicago Fire? We?ll never know for sure. But we?re pretty sure the gas lantern we want right now is going to set the city ablaze--in a good, no-fire-engines-required way.
At Whisky Ginger, a tiny store in Pilsen, husband-and-wife team Dan Knispel and Stevie Koerner are converting old gas lanterns into vintage-chic plug-in lamps that we adore. (Whisky Ginger is open by appointment and always during gallery walk hours on the second Friday night of each month.)
The lamps ($60) take Dan and Stevie about two hours each to convert from flame to bulb, and they?d look fabulous on a bedside table in a summer cottage or as a nostalgic touch in an old-meets-new living room.
Whisky Ginger is packed with hundreds of other vintage items sourced from around the Midwest--look for cute wall decor and even gardening supplies--and Dan and Stevie also take orders for custom furniture made from reclaimed materials. They recently converted a painter?s ladder into a bookshelf and a 1960s Zenith TV into a cocktail bar.
