Sunset at The dec. A glass wave wall blocks traffic noise.
Night view of The dec at the Ritz-Carlton.
You can’t be a swanky downtown hotel and not have a rooftop hangout (see: Trump, Peninsula, Raffaello, et al). But despite its 12th floor lobby and airy greenhouse bar, the Ritz-Carlton never really got with the alfresco program--until now.
The hotel’s just-opened outdoor lounge is called The dec--forgive the punctuation--and the space is working hard to set itself apart. (A brilliant touch: a cocktail menu divided into “batched for those in a hurry” and “crafted to enjoy the view” sections.)
Let’s start with the glow-in-the-dark cocktail tables. They’re wild, yes, but fun in a hey-we’re-in-Miami kind of way. Then there’s “The Lenz,” a 1,300-pound polished stainless-steel sculpture that presides over the patio and gives you a kind of groovy, rear-view-mirror perspective on the scene.
If nighttime scenes aren’t your thing, grab a friend and go for a light lunch of sweet-and-savory watermelon-and-pistachio salad ($14) and crisp fava bean bruschetta ($12).
Linger over a Nolet’s gin drink with orange bitters ($14) or something sweet off the ice cream menu. The banana cream push-pop ($6) is as cool as a Lake Michigan breeze.
